Dr Ashley Whitehorn is an innovative researcher who is dedicated to advancing and supporting evidence‑based healthcare globally. She specialises in reproductive health, pregnancy and childbirth, neonates and paediatrics, with a strong focus on evidence synthesis, transfer and implementation. In her role within the JBI Transfer Science team, she contributes to the development and advancement of synthesis, transfer and implementation methodologies and applies them within her areas of expertise. Ashley has also established productive collaborations with clinical and research experts in these areas, convening expert reference groups with national and international members to support high—quality evidence transfer and implementation work.
Dr Whitehorn completed her PhD in nutritional physiology at the University of South Australia in 2016, supervised by A/Prof Alison Coates, Dr Alison Hill, Prof Marie Williams and Prof Peter Howe. Her doctoral research examined the effects of long‑chain omega‑3 fatty acid (fish oil) supplementation in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Throughout her doctoral and postdoctoral research, Ashley developed a strong interest in evidence synthesis methodologies, including systematic reviews, and in the role of evidence in informing healthcare delivery and policy.
After completing her PhD, she joined the Implementation Science team at JBI, University of Adelaide, where she strengthened her passion for evidence‑based healthcare, focusing on the areas of cancer and burns. She later transitioned to the JBI Transfer Science team, where she continues to advance and apply methodologies in evidence synthesis, transfer and implementation. This move also enabled her to focus her work on evidence‑based healthcare in reproductive health, pregnancy and childbirth, neonatal care and paediatrics.
Ashley is a member of key evidence-based health care groups including:
- JBI Evidence Based Point-of-Care Methodology group (Convenor)
- Guidelines International Network (GIN)
Ashley's current research focuses on:
- Evidence transfer methodologies in health care
- Living evidence and its practical application for point-of-care resources (JBI Best Practice)
- Evidence implementation in neonates through collaboration with the local hospital
