Dr Anthony D Pisaniello MBBS PhD FRACP FACC FCSANZ FSCAI, Clinical Senior Lecturer, is an academic interventional and structural cardiologist with research interests in omega-3 fatty acids, aortic valve stenosis, and atherosclerosis. After completing general medical and cardiology training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, he completed a PhD at The University of Adelaide, a TAVI Clinical Fellowship at Manchester Royal Infirmary, UK, and an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, USA. His PhD studies investigated the impact of omega-3 fatty acids on inflammatory mediators in the vessel wall that promote atherosclerosis. This included cell, animal, and human studies, all randomised controlled trials. This research has been presented at numerous local and international meetings, including as a Finalist for the American College of Cardiology Young Investigator Award. The beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acids on the atherosclerosis and other heart diseases, and the mechanisms leading to this, are a focus of Dr Pisaniello's research. He has already demonstrated a reduction in vascular inflammation with eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) supplementation, but no effect of omega-3s on aortic valve calcification.
Dr Pisaniello's research is studying the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on heart diseases, in particular atherosclerosis and aortic valve calcification.
