I hold a PhD (awarded 2002) and a Masters Degree in Primary Health Care (palliative care specialty) from Flinders University, Australia.
In 2003, following completion of my PhD, I was recruited to the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I served as A/Professor & A/Dean, Bachelor of Nursing Science (BScN) Collaborative Program, Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.
In 2004, I completed an Intensive Bioethics Course at the Joseph P. & Rose F. Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University, Washington DC. In 2005, I was awarded a prestigious two–year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Knowledge Translation funded by the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) & Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) CADRE Program at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, Canada.
I served as Associate Professor at the Australian Catholic University and Deputy Director of the Australian Catholic University & St Vincent’s & Mercy Private Hospital in the ‘Nursing Research Unit’ in Melbourne, Australia.
In 2008, I was recruited by the School of Nursing, University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia. I was a senior tenured nurse academic and served as Program Director: Higher Degrees by Research. I taught evidence-based practice, knowledge translation, palliative care, and qualitative research in undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programs. I supervised honours and higher degree/doctoral students.
I had disciplinary and interdisciplinary research collaborations in Australia, UK, South Africa, USA, and Canada; in sum attracting over $2 million in competitive, collaborative funding. I co-presented research findings at local, national and international conferences, authored and co-authored refereed papers, wrote book chapters published by Oxford University Press, UK and Elsevier, and co-edited textbooks for Oxford University Press, UK.
I have a longstanding interest in relational ethics, palliative care, compassion, caregiving, leadership, work cultures, and teamwork. I investigated the degree to which social processes (social capital) facilitate or hinder the flow and exchange of knowledge and resources in teams to promote productivity and better outcomes for all. I led a funded study with local and international researchers to investigate the degree to which compassion can be taught to undergraduate nursing students.
In 2004, I was inducted as a member of The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (SIGMA) at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, Canada. I was appointed to serve as Chair of The Research and Scholarship Advisory Council (RSAC), Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) from 2015-2017, having served as a member of the RSAC from 2012-2015. Sigma is the second-largest global nursing organisation with approximately 135,000 members. I was invited to participate in the Global Advisory Panel on the Future of Nursing (GAPFON) Pan Pacific meeting in Seoul, South Korea in June 2015. I served on the International Advisory Committee for the International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences (Elsevier) and is a reviewer for nursing and allied health journals.
I was a ‘Member Scholar Academic’ at The International Institute for Qualitative Methodology (IIQM), Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, Canada. I was a member of the Royal College of Nursing UK, and the Australian College of Nursing.
Prior to my academic career, I had a successful career in clinical nursing practice. I served in a range of administrative, teaching and clinical nursing roles. I had extensive clinical experience in radiation oncology; aged care; community and district nursing (Royal District Nursing Service); sole nurse practitioner in a primary health care clinic, and over 15 years in hospice & palliative and supportive care. In 1990, I was commissioned to co-lead the establishment of a Hospice and Palliative Care Unit and community palliative care service in a tertiary hospital in South Australia.
