Dr Ahsan Asif

Postdoctoral Fellow

School of Agriculture, Food and Wine

Faculty of Sciences

Ahsan is an agricultural scientist having interest in plant breeding, genetics and molecular biology. During his PhD, he focused on improving the salinity tolerance of bread wheat. This involved large-scale glasshouse and field trials and genotyping by sequencing to identify novel loci, candidate genes and genetic markers linked to salt tolerance sub-traits. Using non-destructive high-throughput platforms, he genotyped and phenotyped bread wheat mapping populations and conducted quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis. Performance of these QTL were further evaluated under saline field conditions across South Australia and Western Australia. Currently, Ahsan is a Postdoctoral Fellow on a GRDC-funded project (UA00163) “Pulse Breeding Australia: Faba Bean Breeding”. This project involves the development of new high yielding faba bean varieties having better adaptation to the major production regions in Australia, improved disease resistance and herbicide tolerance than current varieties.
