Dr Abebe Basazn Mekuria is an Adjunct Research Associate in the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences at Adelaide University. He holds a PhD in Pharmacy from the University of South Australia (now Adelaide University), where his doctoral research focused on evaluating patient-reported outcome measures for the longitudinal monitoring of medicine-related harm.

His research interests include medication safety, quality use of medicines, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance, pharmacy practice, and patient-reported outcome measures. His work focuses on developing and evaluating patient-centred approaches for the early detection and longitudinal monitoring of potential medicine-related harm, particularly among older adults and people taking multiple medicines.

Dr Mekuria has experience in clinical and academic pharmacy, research design, systematic reviews, patient-reported outcomes research, psychometric evaluation, longitudinal data analysis, and mixed-methods research. He has contributed to multidisciplinary research, academic publishing, peer review, and research supervision.

His research aims to strengthen evidence-based practice, improve medication safety, and support the translation of research findings into clinical practice and healthcare policy.

My research focuses on medication safety, Quality Use of Medicines, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance, pharmacy practice, and patient-reported outcomes. I am particularly interested in the early identification, monitoring, and prevention of medicine-related harm, especially among older adults and people using multiple medicines who has a risk of adverse medicine events.

My work explores how patient-reported outcome measures can be used to identify and monitor medicine-related symptoms and harm in clinical practice and aged-care settings. Through systematic reviews, longitudinal studies, quantitative analyses, and mixed-methods research, I investigate approaches that support patient-centred medication safety and improve the quality use of medicines.

I completed my PhD in Pharmacy at the Quality Use of Medicines and Pharmacy Research Centre, University of South Australia (Adelaide University), where I evaluated a patient-reported outcome measure for longitudinal monitoring of medicine-related harm. This research contributed to advancing methods for detecting potential medicine-related problems and supporting safer, evidence-based medication management.

More broadly, my research interests include medication safety, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance, pharmacy practice, health services research, and implementation science. I collaborate with researchers, healthcare professionals, consumers, and policymakers to generate evidence that can improve health outcomes and inform healthcare practice and policy.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration, I aim to contribute to safer medicine use, improved patient outcomes and evidence-informed healthcare, while supporting the integration of patient perspectives into medication safety research and practice.
