Professor You-il Lee is a political economist and Professor of International Business in the School of Management, College of Business and Law, Adelaide University. He provides academic leadership and strategic oversight across international business, management, and multidisciplinary business programs, with a strong emphasis on international engagement, industry collaboration, and experiential learning.
His internationally recognised research sits at the intersection of global political economy and international business, with particular expertise in globalisation and regionalism, the political economy of foreign direct investment (FDI), and state–market relations. Using an institutional and comparative political economy approach, his work examines how governments, multinational firms, and global capital interact, with a sustained focus on the Korean Peninsula, Northeast Asia, and Australia–Asia economic relations.
Professor Lee has published widely in leading international journals and with major academic presses. His scholarship includes influential authored and co-authored research monographs with Routledge, including The Political Economy of Foreign Direct Investment in Korea: Evolution, Dynamics and Contradictions (2025), Cross-Cultural Challenges of Managing “One Belt One Road” Projects (2022), The Korean Economy: From Growth to Maturity (2019), and The Political Economy of New Regionalism in Northeast Asia (2018).
In addition, he has led and contributed to externally funded research and international partnerships, played a key role in academic governance, accreditation, and major curriculum reform, and supervises HDR students in international business and political economy.

External research funding (2015–2025)
Secured AUD $740k+ in competitive research funding within an external funding portfolio exceeding AUD $1.37m, including major grants from Korean government agencies (Academy of Korean Studies), the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Australia–Korea Foundation; New Colombo Plan Mobility Program), the One Asia Foundation, and Australian industry R&D bodies, including the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation.
