A/Prof Wu is an emerging research leader, with a steeply rising trajectory in research on nutrient-gut interactions and type 2 diabetes. He was a top medical graduate (2009) of Southeast University (Nanjing, China), completed a University of Adelaide PhD conferred with a University Doctoral Research Medal (2013), and transformed into a research group leader during his Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) Mary Overton Early Career (2015-17) and Flory (2018-20) Fellowships. He was awarded a ‘top-ranked’ Mid-Career Fellowship from The Hospital Research Foundation (THRF) in 2020 and was promoted to “Associate Professor” by the University of Adelaide in 2021.

Type 2 diabetes is now a "global pandemic", and is a leading cause of blindness, amputations, heart disease and kidney disease. Early detection of individuals at risk, and achieving good glycaemic control in those with type 2 diabetes, are key to improving health outcomes and reducing costs. The gut (stomach and intestines) is central to the control of blood glucose and appetite, and therefore represents a logical, yet relatively unexplored, target for novel and improved treatments for type 2 diabetes. A/Prof Wu's program focuses on the pivotal role of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in glucose metabolism, aiming to understand the pathophysiology, and establish novel strategies to mitigate the risk of type 2 diabetes. This work has achieved international recognition by establishing: (i) key pathological features of GI function responsible for elevated blood glucose in type 2 diabetes, (ii) marked variations in gut-mediated glucose responses along the length of the GI tract, (iii) the predominance of the incretin hormone, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), over other gut peptides, in mediating these actions, and (iv) the substantial potential for stimulating endogenous GLP-1 to optimise glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. A/Prof Wu has co-authored >100 peer-reviewed publications in the top-tier journals, featuring predominantly in the leading journals in the field of diabetes (e.g. Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Diabetes Obes Metab), nutrition (e.g. Am J Clin Nutr) and Endocrinology (e.g. JCEM).

With ongoing funding support from the NHMRC, Diabetes Australia, The Hospital Research Foundation, Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Committee and The University of Adelaide, his team is determining: (i) the roles of bitter taste sensing pathways in different regions of the gut in the regulation of gastrointestinal function, energy intake and postprandial glycaemia, (ii) the potential of utilising bile acids as a therapy to restore glucose homeostasis and measuring circulating bile acid profiles to predict future risk of type 2 diabetes, and (iii) the clinical efficacy of combining a dietary strategy with pharmacotherapy on glycaemic control. These studies have a high potential to establish novel, safe and cost-effective solutions to type 2 diabetes. In this effort, he has also built novel research platforms (i.e. organ-on-a-chip) in collaboration with Prof Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem and Dr Tim Zhao to markedly enhance the capability for investigating the mechanisms by which intraluminal contents interact with the gut and for screening effective therapeutic regimen for evaluation in clinical trials.
