Patrick (Pat) James was Foundation Professor and Head of the former School of Natural and Built Environments at UniSA from 2004 to 2010, and following this a part time Professor of Teaching and Learning Initiatives in the Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment, where he jointly led a project to develop an online Associate Degree in Engineering for Open Universities Australia. He retired and became an adjunct Professor in 2015 and has subsequently rekindled his passion for geological fieldwork and geoscience education and outreach to the general public, eg http://projectlive.org.au/.
Prior to joining UniSA, Patrick was Associate Professor in Geoscience and Deputy Head of School of Earth and Environmental Science, former Associate Dean of Science (Teaching and Learning and Learning Technology), and former Head of the Geology and Geophysics Department at the University of Adelaide. Patrick was also (2002-2004) Programme Leader for Education and Training in the CRC for Landscape Environments and Mineral Exploration.
Patrick has a strong research record in geoscience, including structure, tectonics, geological mapping, remote sensing and mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and significant international research and publication and external grant success. His other main academic interests are in science and in particular geoscience education, and in eLearning, Learning Technology, Interactive Multimedia development, desktop videoconferencing and Computer Aided Learning.
More recently as an Adjunct Professor with UniSA he has developed a considerable new research strand and activity in Geotourism Development, Geoconservation, Geodiversity and Geoscience Interpretation in conjunction with Nature Foundation SA.

Patrick James has a record of consistent activity in field-based geological and regional mapping, structural and geology and tectonics. He has received ARC research grants for 25 of the last 30 years. He has also received industry and government grants and consultancies.,During his tenure as an academic researcher he studied the geological, structural and tectonic development of complex terrains in Antarctica, Central Australia, and more recently in South Australia. Patrick has consistently supervised Postdoctoral fellows, postgraduates and honours students and has published research results regularly in national and international forums.,In his role as Head of the School of Natural and Built Environments, he developed a research theme in environmental sustainability and in particular the assessment of Natural Hazards. This is still being pursued along with a continuing interest in the application of computers and information and communication technology to tertiary education.
