Dr Karen Murphy is an Associate Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics at Adelaide University and a Dietitian and Sports Dietitian trained in Motivational Interviewing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (MIT-CBT) techniques for behaviour change. She has a breadth of skills and expertise crossing nutrition and dietetics, psychology, vascular health and healthy ageing. She has experience not only in research and academia but also private practice.

Karen has authored over 90 peer reviewed publications, plus book chapters, industry reports, position statments and reporting guidelines for nutrition. She has been awarded over $8.4 million in research grants and fellowship from the National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), industry, Co-operative Research Centres and philanthropic bodies.

Karen's research uses an evidence-based approach to explore relationships between diet and lifestyle on chronic disease risk and healthy ageing using randomised controlled dietary intervention trials. Specifically, her research investigates the impact of dietary patterns and lifestyle behaviours on cardiovascular disease, cognitive performance, and risk of dementia.

Karen has expertise in the design, implementation and reporting of randomised controlled trials in nutrition and is part of the Federation of European Nutrition Societies (FENS) working group who have developed a nutrition extension to the CONSORT guidelines (CONsolidated Standards Of Reporting Trials) specific to nutrition trials. Karen is leading the CONSORT-Nut taskforce for the global dissemination of the CONSORT-Nut guidelines.

Her expertise and skills are internationally recognised through multiple collaborative relationships and is a recipient of 24 research and travel awards including a South Australian Young Tall Poppy Award (2009) and Australia Nutrition Trust Fund traveling fellowship (2015).

Dietary patterns, Mediterranean Diet, foods, nutrients, flavonoids, dietary lipids & fatty acids, cardiovascular disease risk factors, cognition, weight loss, dementia risk reduction, randomised controlled trials.
