Colin Hall is an Industry Professor at the Future Industries Institute, and is a key member of the Materials Engineering Group. Colin is interested in helping Australian manufacturing be globally competitive through the uptake of innovative research. Colin has worked in private industry for 9 years and academia for 21 years giving him a unique perspective for industry engaged research. His approach to research is focused on identifying new materials or enhanced ways of using existing ones to solve problems. Specifically focusing on additive manufacturing and coatings for industry partners operating in space, defence,  automotive, mining, agriculture and medical.
Colin completed his PhD in material science in 2014. 
 
Colin is the Research Director Defence within the newly formed Additive Manufacturing CRC (AMCRC). This CRC's mission is to grow Australian manufacutring via the adoption of AM and coating technologies. He is focused on doing this in a defence context.  
 
The groups thin film coating capablities are world leading and support projects and industry partners in space (Linear Variable Filters), communications (optical filters for photonics), energy (reflective and electrical coatings) and automotive (decorative coatings).  
With an extensive tribology lab, testing to real world conditions is fundemental to the groups apporach in developing solutions. The group also supports the uptake of Additive Manufacturing by industry, supporting design, test and qualification. 
 
Colin supports the materials community by his work as the South Australia branch president for Materials Australia.
