I am a Research Fellow and physiotherapist. My research prioritises partnering with people with lived experience of pain (consumers) as co-researchers to bridge the translational gap between research and practice in pain care. I am also passionate about using rigorous methodology to enhance the quality of clinical research and ultimately, the evidence-base for pain treatments. My research interests include persistent pain, pain science education, osteoarthritis, placebos (or 'sham' interventions), and blinding in clinical trials.
I have attracted over $5 million in research funding, I have published 43 peer-reviewed articles in top-quality journals, and my research has been presented at over 80 national/international conferences and professional events. In 2021 I was awarded a $150,000 research translation fellowship (John Stuart Colville Fellowship, The Hospital Research Foundation-Arthritis) to lead my own line of osteoarthritis research as Chief Investigator. I am collaborating with consumers, clinicians, pain organisations, and marketing experts to co-design educational messages that aim to debunk pervasive myths about osteoarthritis for public messaging campaigns. I am also Lead Trial Coordinator of two large-scale NHMRC-funded clinical trials investigating pain science education and exercise for knee osteoarthritis and persistent neck pain.
I completed my PhD in 2018. My PhD looked at novel ways to improve blinding in clinical trials involving complex physical interventions - such as massage, joint manipulations, needling therapies - which are widely used in physiotherapy. We used magicians' expertise in deceptive techniques to achieve this lofty aim! My PhD work on improving blinding in clinical trials for complex pain treatments has been highly influential in the pain field.
