John is a Forensic and Analytical Chemistry graduate with an Honours Degree in Science from Flinders University. He completed his PhD in Materials Science at the Ian Wark Research Institute in 2007 and subsequently took up the position of AMMRF Flagship Engineer and ToF-SIMS Technologist with Scientific Services (2007 - 2016). He served as a Senior Technical Officer in the FII Technical Services Team and subsequently the STEM Technical Services Team (Chemistry & Biology) from 2016-2024, where responsibilities included:

Contributing to the research and consultancy activities of the Future Industries Institute through the provision of specialised support.
Operation and maintenance of a wide range of laboratory equipment and infrastructure.
Provision of information and guidance to laboratory users and clients, particularly regarding WHS aspects.
Institute Quarantine/Biosecurity Officer - providing oversight to Approved Arrangement activities.
Executive Officer: University Chemical Advisory Safety Committee.
Laboratory and Biosafety management of PC2 facilities.
Representing the UniSA node of Australia Microscopy on the Business and Administration Committee.

His current role is Manager Technical Services: Chemistry & Biology in UniSA STEM, where he is accountable for the successful integration, delivery and management of an extensive range of technical operations/services that support STEM/FII’s research, teaching and commercial activities. This includes leading a team of technical staff, acting as a discipline expert and reference point in providing innovative solutions, optimising resources, and working collaboratively to ensure the delivery of streamlined technical services across the Unit.
