Alpana Sivam is a senior lecturer of Urban and Regional Planning program at the University of South Australia. Alpana has extensive experience in the public and private sectors, having held a variety of senior and executive positions in India and Australia.
As an architect and urban planner, her interests lie in the intersections between these two professions. Her teaching and research mainly focus on the social and urban design aspects of physical planning and urban development. The big issue behind her research and practice is how to make sustainable, climate resilience and an age friendly neighbourhood through interdisciplinary collaboration. Alpana’s current research focuses on housing and ageing, open space, mitigation of climate change in built environment, developing sustainable and age friendly places in a suburbanising world through a combination of design and policy.
Alpana’s scholarly outputs have been documented in over 100 peer-reviewed publications. Her research has been supported by competitive grants including prestigious funding schemes such as the Australian Research Council Linkage Project Grant; Commonwealth Government of Australia Grant and South Australian Government. Alpana’s early career included projects as designing and implementation of one million population sub city Dwarka, Delhi, India.
Her teaching addresses industry and academic concerns by exposing students to ‘real life’ planning and providing them with opportunities to apply their disciplinary theoretical knowledge in real-world practice settings. The quality and impact of her approach been recognised by 2018 Australian Awards for University Teaching Citation.

Research interests cover land use planning and sustainable development, housing policy; housing affordability and delivery system for both developed and developing countries, ageing and its impact on built form, Climate change and urban development, planning, infrastructure and social policy.,Dr Sivam also has research interests in issues of urban space/public space in different cultural context, environmental and cultural sustainability, architectural character and heritage, urban design and urban development.
