Dr. Jared R. Dmello is a Senior Lecturer of Criminology at the University of Adelaide and a Postgraduate Research Coordinator in the School of Social Sciences. He also serves as the Co-Lead of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledges: Resource Collections, Community Engagement & Protocols Workstream for Adelaide University. Jared has led multiple funded research teams on a variety of topics, including illicit networks, firearm violence, and pedagogical innovation, with an externally-funded portfolio of over $2.4 million.
He is a globally recognised expert on illicit networks, with specialisations in gangs, violent extremism, and cartels. Jared has published his research findings in many of the leading peer-reviewed outlets in the field, holds multiple competitive grants, and has been featured by media outlets across the globe as a quoted expert, including Rolling Stone Magazine and National Geographic, over 125 times in nine languages and on every continent, as shown to the right. His peer-reviewed scholarship has been viewed over 27,000 times across the entire planet. In 2024, Jared testified before the Australian Senate as an invited expert on the threat posed by right-wing extremism to the country.
Across his research areas, Jared is passionate about advocating for under-represented and historically excluded populations through his research. He regularly engages with diverse bodies of stakeholders to translate research findings into policy and operational actions to effect real-world change. He is particularly interested in the implementation of innovative research methodological approaches to examine the impact of inequity on emerging issues of security, with projects including work on forced displacement, the climate crisis, and queer victimisation by extremist organisations.
Because of his global research presence, Dr. Dmello was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Addressing Violent Extremism and Responses to Terrorism (AVERT) Research Network, where he works with an elite group of international scholars and practitioners to better understand violent extremism and to develop strategies for prevention. He also currently serves as the elected Vice Chair of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences: International Section and an Executive Counselor of the American Society of Criminology's Division on International Criminology. A testament to his commitment to research excellence, he is also the Associate Editor of Crime & Delinquency, a top-ranked criminology journal, and the Journal of Mass Violence Research, an open access publication venue, in addition to serving on multiple editorial boards.
