Senior Lecturer

School of Allied Health Science and Practice

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD - email supervisor to discuss availability.

James is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Allied Health Science & Practice, where he coordinates a diverse range of curricula and leads multiple academic initiatives. A passionate and innovative educator, he has held leadership roles across nursing, paramedicine, medicine, and clinical education and has been a champion for diversity, equity and the improvement of workplace cultures.
James has served in senior clinical roles as both a paramedic and an emergency nurse practitioner, gaining expertise across a wide range of healthcare settings and specialities in Australia and the UK. His signature authentic learning approaches in human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, patient assessment skills and professional practice, draw heavily on these bedside (& roadside) learning experiences. His teaching has been widely celebrated through SoTL, awards and fellowship recognition.

James has been an early contributor to the university education of paramedics in Australia and remains actively engaged in the governance and regulation of the profession at several levels. Internationally, he played a key role in developing extended care roles for paramedics within the UK’s NHS and later the local introduction of this novel shift in care delivery which supports alternative pathways of care and reducing avoidable emergency department presentations.

His own research and scholarship of teaching and learning span diverse areas and have frequently challenged traditions and practice conventions. Original published peer reviewed presented work includes themes such as,
• Challenging the validity, reliability and sustainability of resuscitation training and credentialing conventions and traditions
• New definitions for understanding and determining graduate work-readiness which challenge the validity of Novice to Expert dogma
• The use of student partnerships in high stakes assessment and programmatic assessment to improve sustainable student learning
• Re-thinking approaches to fluid resuscitation principles in response to new understanding of haemodynamics
• Disparity between paramedic clinician competency and the most frequent low acuity case presentations of patients with chronic disease and co-morbidities

James welcomes any health or education research collaboration or supervision inquiries.
