Nate Camatta
Higher Degree by Research Candidate
Adelaide Law School
Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics
Nate Camatta is undertaking an MPhil at the Adelaide Law School. His thesis seeks to elucidate key principles for the design of new legal instruments to facilitate ecological restoration, while accounting for adaptation towards climate threats. His project involves synthesising key concepts and recent developments in scholarship about climate adaptation and ecological restoration science and theory.
In November 2024, Nate received the Sustainability Advocate award from the Adelaide Graduate Research School, in recognition of his focus on environmental sustainability and global challenges.
In conjunction with his thesis commitments, Nate is also a Project Coordinator for the Society of Ecological Restoration (SER). In this project, he is working with SER on model frameworks for ecological restoration.
Nate is engaged by the intersection of science and the law. He comes from a legal background, and over the years also developed a deep interest in and appreciation for the natural world. Through his double degree in law and science, he began to see that the response of the law to environmental harm was, in many cases, unsatisfactory. This sparked his significant interest in environmental legal reform, particularly with respect to Climate Change Law and Minerals & Energy Law.
As a Research Assistant to Dr Alexandra Wawryk, Nate conducted legal research into law and policy associated with hydrogen production across all Australian jurisdictions. He also contributed to research on the legal framework for the protection of cultural heritage in relation to South Australia's Mining Act.
