My research interests are in cancer, cellular signalling, extracellular vesicle biology, and microscopy. Though many diseases interest me, I find the systems that support these diseases to be most interesting. For example, cancer cells create environments that support their needs. Cells that support cancer cells don't even need to be cancerous themselves, they readily provide support in a moment's notice. This support is sequestered via cell signalling, partially facilitated through extracellular vesicles, a process that is essential to both normal and pathological tissue function.
I am also interested in the application of various microscopy techniques. These techniques help us visualise the very small and have broad applications. What I find most exciting about these platforms is their accessibility. Visualising structures at the molecular level previously was only possible with electron microscopy. While the resolution offered by electron microscopy is superior in many ways, quantification of these images is frequently difficult. Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, a broad grouping of various techniques, is progressively changing how we visualise structures at the molecular level. It is these techniques such as dSTORM, expansion microscopy, and super-resolution optical fluctuation imaging that I find most exciting.
