Benjamin Cherry-Smith is a current PhD candidate in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Adelaide. He is currently researching the impact of the US-Australia Alliances' on Australian foreign policy and approach to the Indo-Pacific and Antarctic regions.

Benjamin has previously completed a research Masters at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He has also completed a Master of International Relations by coursework and Bachelor of Government and International Relations at Griffith University and a Graduate Diploma of Public Policy at the University of Tasmania.

My research is focused on understanding how a state's culture and identity contribute to and impact state policy development, articulation, and implementation. Specifically, I employ an ontological security lens examining how language is deployed to convey policy priorities. My research is principally focused on historic and contemporary Australian foreign and security policy and American policy and political communication. Along these lines, my PhD thesis investigates how the US-Australia Alliance has shaped Australia's foreign policy development and approach to the Indo-Pacific and Antarctic regions.

My PhD is funded under the University of Adelaide's priority ‘Information Capability’ research area.
