Prof Jenny Mortimer
Professor
School of Agriculture, Food and Wine
College of Sciences
Overview
Jenny Mortimer is Professor of Plant Synthetic Biology in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine at Adelaide University, and Deputy Director of The Waite Research Institute. She is also an Affiliate Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), USA, and Director of Plant Systems Biology at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), USA.
After completing her PhD at the University of Cambridge, UK, Jenny explored how engineering the plant cell wall could deliver sustainable and economically viable biofuels: first as a postdoc in Cambridge, then as a Fellow at RIKEN, Japan, before joining LBNL in 2014. She joined University of Adelaide as a Top Talent appointment in 2021.
Research Focus
Jenny’s team works at the interface of plant cell biology, glycobiology, and synthetic biology. Research centres on understanding and manipulating plant cell metabolism, with a focus on complex glycosylation — in particular, the structure, biosynthesis, and function of cell wall polysaccharides. The overarching goal is to develop crops that contribute to a sustainable and renewable bioeconomy.
The group works across a range of plant species, from model systems (Arabidopsis, Brachypodium) to established and emerging crops (sorghum, switchgrass, poplar, duckweed).
Research Programs & Collaborations
Jenny’s research is supported by several major national and international programs:
- ARC Centre of Excellence Plants for Space (P4S) - applying synthetic biology to develop new crops for food and materials production in controlled growth environments, including for space settlement.
- ARC Training Centre for Future Crops Development - applying agricultural biotechnologies to develop resilient field crops.
- ARC Research Hub for Engineering Plants to Replace Fossil Carbon - developing Australian feedstocks to support the production of biojet fuel.
- US Department of Energy (DoE) Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) - leading a team across Adelaide and California to reengineer the plant cell wall for sustainable production of fuels and biochemicals from biomass.
- US DoE m-CAFES — enhancing plant–microbiome interactions for sustainable biomass crop production, focusing on the role of the cell wall in determining the temporal and spatial dynamics between plants and microbes.
Work in the group is also supported from a number of other sources including industry funding, AEA Ignite, and research development corporations.
Honours & Professional Service (selected)
- World Economic Forum Young Scientist (2016/17), contributing to the WEF Code of Ethics for Researchers (widgets.weforum.org/coe).
- Jan Andersen Award Mid-Career Award for Women in Plant Science (ASPS, 2024)
- Bruce Stone Award for Excellence in Cell Wall Biochemsitry (2024)
- Australian Society of Plant Sciences (ASPS) representative, Science Meets Parliament (2023).
- Handling editor, Plant Cell Physiology and The Plant Journal.
- Member, Engineering Biology Research Consortium (EBRC) Policy and International Engagement Committee.
- Faculty Research Integrity Advisor, Adelaide University.
- Member, ALLY Network.
- Management Committe, Plant Synthetic Biology Australia - Adelaide
Jenny is actively involved in science communication and outreach, engaging with media, South Australian schools and museums, and the broader public.
