Ms. Janet Smith is an academic nurse with active research, clinical and teaching roles. Currently, undertaking a PhD at the Basil Hetzel Institute and University of Adelaide. Her research aims to evaluate sex differences in coronary heart disease, with particular interest in short-term and long-term clinical outcomes post cardiology-based interventions as well as understanding chest pain characteristics associated with coronary heart disease. The vision of this research is to ensure that women as well as men receive appropriate, equitable as well as accessible interventions for the management of their coronary heart disease.

The vision of this research is to ensure that women as well as men receive appropriate, equitable as well as accessible interventions for the management of their coronary heart disease.

Her PhD role extends to the supervision of medical students undertaking research projects at the Basil Hetzel Institute. As a supervisor she provides support to the student with the end goal to produce a scoping review. This role includes guiding the student through the step-by-step process: searching for literature, screening research articles, extracting appropriate data to answer the research question as well as helping with the manuscript preparation process.

In addition to these roles, she is an experienced undergraduate nursing lecturer in the School of Nursing at the University of Adelaide. She has coordinated courses into both Undergraduate and Master of Nursing programs. Her teaching interest includes promoting person centred care, the importance of assessing a person’s health care needs, understanding the impact of disease processes on the person's ability to self-care as well as the benefits of working in partnership with people receiving care.

Her teaching role extends to the supervision of master’s in nursing science students. This role entails guiding the post-graduate student through the research process. This guidance allows the student to learn how to formulate a research question, write a research proposal and ethics application, implement the research project, analyse data as well as produce a research manuscript ready for publication.

In addition to these roles, she has mentored junior staff in both casual and permanent teaching roles. Her philosophy in mentoring is to share knowledge and to build skills sets in staff to create an experienced teaching team that delivers quality education to students.

As an experienced Intensive Care Registered Nurse at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, she provides evidence-based person centred care to people who have undergone cardio-thoracic surgical procedures. Her goal is to deliver care that improves clinical outcomes and recovery in people who live with cardio-thoracic conditions.
