Nutrition is the most inexpensive intervention that can possibly impact clinical outcomes. Imagine if death could be prevented just by ensuring provision of the right nutritional support while patients are critically unwell? Coming from a developing nation, India, Tej's aim is to look at cost effective interventions like nutritional support, that can impact clinical outcomes. Being a trained anaesthetist her research skills involve conduct of complex studies requiring emergency management of situations and studies requiring multidisciplinary involvement for successful conduct. Her clinical skills have always been admired by her peers while she handles even the most stressful resuscitation situations with utmost calm and reliable judgement. Fondly called the smiling doctor is always a delight to work with in a team as she takes over leadership with ease and friendliness. She claims her empathy as her biggest strength as she has learnt from her past personal health struggles involving ICU stay as a patient and as a caregiver. She is also an ICU trainee with the college of intensive care medicine and has advanced airway skills, communication skills including having successful organ donation conversations and skills required for effective management of all critically ill patients. She has over 18 yrs experience in intensive care practice along with a training in utilisation of nanotechnology in medicine, ALS, diploma in echocardiography, conducting telemedicine consults. She has been ALS 2 instructor and nursing educator at SAIMA and CALHN respectively. She has been selected for peer mentoring program by the university of adelaide and has mentored 2 PhD students, 3 masters' students and 2 medical students and also with the public education foundation and is happy to mentor candidates looking for support due to their diverse regional backgrounds. She moved to Australia in 2015 to further her career in intensive care. She taught with the ANU medical school as associate clinical lecturer while working as ICU registrar before moving to Adelaide in 2017. She completed full time PhD in acute care medicine specifically looking at intensive care nutrition in October 2022 all while going through several cycles of IVF and has been blessed with a baby daughter just before her PhD completion. She peer reviews for over 20 journals including Cochrane, AJCN, Clinical Nutrition, ESPEN etc and has been an invited grant assessor for NHMRC, MRFF funds. Resilience, positive outlook and perseverance are what she calls the secret of her success. Her studies involve understanding nutrient utilisation in health, factors affecting nutrient absorption and utilisation in intensive care patients, factors affecting and effective management of gastrointestinal dysfunction for better clinical outcomes in critically ill patients.
My research involves exploring evidence based approaches to bring about changes in nutrient delivery that can have a positive impact on clinical outcomes in the critically ill.
