Kate Rhodes has three qualifications in Nursing: as a Developemental Educator, a Registered General Nurse, and as a Registered Mental Health Nurse. She has 27 years experience working in various mental health teams and at a number of nursing levels. Until April 2018, Kate was working in an adult community mental health setting encompassing a number of integrated roles, Kate provided direct consumer clinical coordination, emergency mental health assessments, and supportive nursing care to consumers and their families. Kate has prior experience working with adults in acute and rehabilitation inpatient mental health units, in addition to providing case management to homeless youth with mental health problems within an adolescent community team. Kate undertook her Bachelor of Psychology at UniSA whilst working part-time as a nurse, graduating in 2010.
Kate worked as a tutor in 'Health Psychology' in 2015 within the School of Social Health Sciences at Flinders University after completing a first class honours degree in psychology (2011). She was also involved in 'Research Methods' in the Master of Public Health program in 2015, and was the Course Coordinator for 'Undertaking Translational Research in Cancer Prevention' in the Master of Public Health program in 2017. Kate graduated with a PhD in the School of Medicine at Flinders University in 2017. The title of her dissertation: 'The Intergenerational Transmission of Dietary Behaviours in Three Generation Australian Families' focused on health behaviours, family health history, and disease prevention through lifestyle behaviour change.
Working at UniSA since 2016, Kate has experience as a postgraduate lecturer and Course Coordinator in the courses: 'Perspectives in Mental Health Practice', 'Theoretical Approaches to Mental Health Practice' and ‘Consolidation of Mental Health/Nursing Practice’. These courses are part of the Graduate Diploma of Mental Health & Mental Health Nursing degree programs. From 2018-20 she drew on her mixed methods PhD experience to teach Masters students in the 'Quantitative Design for Nursing and Midwifery Health Research' course. Mental Health is a growing topic area and in response to the health industry UniSA has developed several new courses and postgraduate certificate qualifications in mental health which Kate has been involved in developing and teaching into. In addition, Kate joined the undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing Program for one year as Associate Course Coordinator for the 'Mental Health' course.
Research interests include mental health research that translates into clinical practice; suicide prevention and safety planning; research methods and statistics.
