School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering

College of Engineering and Information Technology

Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD - email supervisor to discuss availability.

A/Prof Jiawen Li is an inventor and highly adaptable engineer, leading the intravascular imaging program at the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. She also serve as the Deputy Director (Engineering Science) at the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS). Her innovation has led to her being selected as Fellow of NHMRC, National Heart Foundation and L’Oréal-UNESCO. She has won numerous prestigious awards and honours (including Sony Women in Technology Award with Nature, Global 35 Under 35 by MIT Technology Review, Young Tall Poppy Science Award, Superstar of STEM, Australian and New Zealand Optical Society Mid-Career Prize, National Heart Foundation Innovation Award, and Best New Invention Award by Knowledge Commercialisation Australasia). She has also secured >$23 million research funding as a chief investigator (>$9 million as the first-named chief investigator CI-A, including MRFF EMCR, ARC LIEF, NHMRC Ideas, Investigator and Development grants).

Jiawen and her team are developing ultrathin, flexible, multimodal fibre-optic imaging probes that will enable cross-sectional visualisation of vascular arteries with high resolution, molecular contrast, and sensitivity that are not possible with any other existing technologies. This cutting-edge tool will underpin biological studies to help answer fundamental questions at cellular level of how plaques evolve, how they cause heart attacks, and how they respond to different treatment.

Available projects for PhD students in 2025 include:
1. Quantum biosensing through fibre-optic devices (supported by ARC Training centre);
2. Meta-optics for medical imaging (a joint PhD with University of Nottingham and ARC Centre of Excellence TMOS);
3. Real-time optical imaging of the aqueous flow pathways of eye (with potential industry collaboration opportunities);
4. Ultrathin 3D micro-printed imaging catheter (with opportunities to spend >=1 year in Stuttgart, Germany)

Dr Jiawen Li has been named in the 2023 global list of Innovators Under 35 by the MIT Technology Review for her work in biomedical engineering. Dr Li is the only recipient of this prestigious global recognition from Australia.

High-resolution optical imaging technologies have rapidly gained importance, and a range of antibody-specific fluorescent biomarkers have driven new insights in disease mechanisms. However, optical techniques degrade rapidly in solid tissue due to absorption and multiple scattering of the photons, limiting their imaging depth and largely restricting their use.
