My research broadly investigates Australia’s changing population and the implications of this for society and communities. Much of this work involves an examination of population diversity and the impacts of diversity (including migration, age, gender and other forms of diversity) on social and civic systems. This includes the interaction between people and the built environment, including housing, access to green space, mobility and transport, and age friendly cities and communities. My background includes a PhD in Human Geography and Honours in Social Policy.
My most recent work explores how design of urban built environments influence wellbeing and more specifically, ageing well. This includes exploring housing choices and design, such as mixed-use buildings and neighbourhoods, retirement village living, vertical communities, inner city ageing, challenges in ageing in rural and regional settings, and international comparisons of age friendly and dementia friendly cities. My research often includes using innovative approaches such as citizen science, GIS and spatial analysis of social issues, ‘walk-along’ interviews or photovoice to incorporate rich, qualitative lived experience perspectives.
I am the leader for the Inclusion Stream within the Centre for Markets, Values and Inclusion (CMVI) in UniSA Business and past President of the Australian Association of Gerontology. I welcome inquiries from Masters and PhD candidates interested in: migration and ageing, ageing populations, the built environment, social networks and/or community connectedness, qualitative methodologies, social policy, and migration and mobilities.
