I am an Associate Professor in the Environmental Science program in UniSA STEM.

My teaching has evolved from an igneous petrology and field geology focus to now focusing on Earth and climate systems and the evolution of the landscape and the fate of metals within the landscape. My teaching is focused on providing students with an insight into the inner workings of the Earth and the manner in which the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere are linked. I try to inspire our students to think about the influence we have on the planet and the influence that the earth has on societies around the world. This includes recognising that our modern society is heavily reliant on mineral resources and thinking about the development and use of these resources in a sustainable manner. Unfortunately that often requires understanding the negative impacts of previous extraction/mining on the present environment of Australia.
My research is driven equally by general curiosity about our natural world and an interest is better understanding how the Earth has evolved and working towards finding applications for that knowledge to benefit industry/society. A background in geochemistry and isotope geochemistry has meant that I am able to work on a wide range of scientific problems and enjoy this diversity. This includes my original fields of igneous petrology and geochronology to student projects such as metamorphic petrology, Ediacaran paleontology and sedimentology, regolith geochemistry and plant biogeochemistry, and recent collaborative projects as diverse as elemental imaging of diffusive gel thin-film samples, mouse lungs and oat grains.
I have recently lead the installation and commisioning of a new Laser Ablation Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry facility at UniSA. This includes a Teledyne Photon Machines Iridia 193nm ArF laser and a TOFWERK ICP-TOF R mass spectrometer. We are fortunate to also be able to connect this up to an adjacent Agilent 8900 ICP-MS. We're still exploring all of the wonderful advantages of the fast washout Iridia and the ICP-TOF but 10 ms ablation cell washouts and a measurement rate of 33,000 times per second means that we can do things very fast - with "all" of the elements at once. This equates to sample scanning speeds of up to 2mm per second using a 20 um spot size - lightning fast!
