Jenny Myers is a Clinical Scientist Oesophageal Function, CALHN (Queen Elizabeth Hospital & Royal Adelaide Hospital) and a Senior Lecturer, Department of Surgery, University of Adelaide. Her clinical and research interests are in the area of upper gastrointestinal motility with specific interests in motility disorders, gastro-oesophageal reflux and upper GI surgery, including fundoplication, cardiomyotomy and bariatric surgery. Jenny completed a higher degree (PhD) evaluating factors that contribute to increased risk of troublesome dysphagia after anti-reflux surgery. Expertise in high resolution manometry, intra-luminal impedance and ambulatory reflux monitoring.

Upper GI Research Group

The overarching aim of my clinical research is to develop scientific measures of upper GI function and oesophageal function that lead to better understanding of symptoms for improved treatment outcomes.  

Our aims are to: Advance physiological measurements that better inform management of Upper GI diseases.

Research Expertise
  • Oesophageal motility disorders
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • GI physiology in relation to laparoscopic surgery, including fundoplication, cardiomyotomy, bariatric procedures
Our discoveries include:
  • Exploration of dysphagia after fundoplication revealed
    • 'Oesophageal ileus’ contributes to dysphagia in the early period after fundoplication
    • Distal oesophageal ramp or intrabolus pressure reflects oesophageal outflow resistance
    • Sub-optimal relationship between swallow pressure and bolus flow increases dysphagia risk 
    • Asymmetrical oesophago-gastric junction pressure and troublesome dysphagia after antireflux surgery may relate to hiatal repair
  • Exploration of reflux after bariatric surgery revealed
    • Incidence of bile reflux after bariatric surgery, such as sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery, is low.
The current research programs are:
  • Examining the relationship between luminal diameter and flow through the oesophago-gastric junction, with regard to the symptoms of dysphagia
  • High resolution manometry ± intraluminal impedance in patients with dysphagia.
