His PhD considered how the design and implementation of healthcare system requires nurses to conduct and document patient assessments- and how the complexity and inefficiency of those requirements have increased over time leading to a range of poorly recognised and measured unintended consequences that add to patient risks.
His focus in the shared role with St Andrew's is on integration of the principles of Safety II, Systems thinking and Complex Adaptive Systems Theory into the Safety Framework in the hospital to improve both patient safety but ensuring systems design is meeting the needs of those in healthcare (user, patients and healthcare staff).
