Dr Albert Juhasz is a Research Professor within the Future Industries Institute. Albert’s research is focused on the impact of legacy and emerging contaminants on environmental and human health. He is internationally recognized for his innovative, cross disciplinary research on the refinement of human health exposure through the assessment of contaminant bioavailability and bioaccessibility. Albert also has expertise in organic and inorganic contaminant fate and transport and the development of physicochemical and biological remediation technologies for environmental and human health risk minimisation.
Albert has been involved in contaminant research for over 20 years. During this time, he has led the development of one of the largest contaminant bioavailability-bioaccessibility databases worldwide.  Research has led to significant advancements in knowledge regarding the prediction of arsenic, cadmium, lead, organochlorine pesticide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon relative bioavailability using surrogate in vitro assays. Predictive linear regression models have been adopted by industry for refining contaminant exposure via the incidental soil ingestion pathway. Developed techniques have been implemented at over 100 contaminated sites Australia wide, since 2010, to refine exposure for human health risk assessment.
Outcomes from contaminant bioavailability and bioaccessibility studies have advanced fundamental knowledge on physicochemical mechanisms influencing arsenic, cadmium, lead, organochlorine pesticide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon exposure from soil and dust matrices and physiological parameters influencing contaminant dissolution and precipitation. This has led to a greater understanding of the fate of contaminants in the environment, factors influencing exposure and physico-chemical strategies for minimizing exposure. New knowledge on the refinement of human health exposure assessment has been disseminated through oral presentations at National and International conferences, invited presentations to Industry and academia and delivery of Masterclasses on ‘Incorporating Bioavailability into Human Health Risk Assessment’ for Industry (Australian Remediation Industry Cluster, Australasian Land and Groundwater Association, Australian Contaminated Land Consultants Association, WasteMINZ).
Outcomes from Albert’s human health exposure assessment research has translated into environmental policy refinement for quantifying exposure to environmental contaminants, both Nationally and Internationally. Research outcomes from individual projects have resulted in site-specific exposure refinement with impacts on risk management and remediation decisions. However, meta-analysis of project outcomes has led to the development of National and International environmental guidance / policy (i.e. changes in the approach for human health exposure assessment) which has resulted in significant social, environmental and economic impact for the environmental sector as a whole, for current and future activities. Exposure refinement guidance was incorporated into the National Environmental Protection Measure for the Assessment of Site Contamination (2012; the National approach for the assessment of contaminated sites) and EnHealth Risk Assessment Guidelines (2011) and is utilised by environmental professionals Australia-wide. Exposure assessment research outcomes have also directly impacted international regulatory guidance in the US (US Environmental Protection Agency, Hawai’i Department of Health), Canada (Health Canada, 2011) and New Zealand. 
Albert is an Associate Editor for Critical Reviews in Environmental Science and Technology, Co-editor for Land Pollution in Current Pollution Reports and is on the Editorial Advisory Board for Environmetnal Science and Technology. He is a Consultative Group Member to the International Program on Chemical Safety (IPCS), World Health Organization (WHO), recently completing reviews on creosote, asphalt, chlorobenzenes and manganese. Albert was Vice Chair of the Consultative Group on Creosote, leading deliberations on the environmental impact of creosote and its constituents (CICAD #62 – Coal Tar Creosote, ISBN 92 4 153062 6). Albert is also an expert panel member for contaminated site auditors in Victoria and South Australia, providing advice on the assessment and interpretation of exposure data.
Albert has a H-index of 37 (Scopus); of the 150 articles listed in Scopus, they have received over 5300citations.  He has supervised 15 PhD students at UniSA and other Australian Universities and mentors Postdoctoral Researchers through the UniSA Early Career Researcher Program.

Impact of exposure pathway and source on PFAS absorption and bioavailability (NHMRC project 2020 - 2023)

This project will determine the impact of exposure pathway and source on PFAS absorption and bioavailability for human health risk assessment. The project will focus on five priority PFAS commonly found in firefighting foams. To achieve this objective, the extent of PFAS absorption into the bloodstream following ingestion, inhalation or dermal contact will be determined and simple, rapid, inexpensive methods will be developed for its prediction.
