Entrapment of therapeutic agents: The production of a wide variety of such composites has allowed for the combination of the high surface area and biocompatibility of pSi with the use of a multitude of polymerization techniques including the surface initiated ring opening polymerization of poly(L-lactide) and the free radical polymerization of vinylbenzylthymine. Work has also focused on the use of iCVD for the low temperature solvent free polymerization of thermo and pH responsive polymers. It is hoped that with further experimentation these inorganic/organic pSi/polymer hybrid materials will show promising drug delivery properties along with biocompatibility and biodegradability.,Direct attachment of therapeutic agents: The conjugation of biomolecules to the surface of pSi via the creation of a multitude of novel organic linker compounds has been performed in an attempt to control the release of these tailor made (organically synthesized) biomolecules. It is envisioned that with further tuning the future use of these new composite materials could lead to the development of cancer therapies with a more targeted delivery method that could help to minimize the toxic systemic effects of future cancer treatments (compared to conventional methods, such as chemotherapy).
