Recent evidence has identified the importance of immune system function in cognition and behaviour, so we are interested in exploring the neuroimmune axis in cognitive function and neuropsychiatric disorders. Our current research involves the identification and investigation into the role of neuroimmune biomarkers such as cytokines and oxidative stress molecules in psychiatric disorders. Depression, Psychosis, Mood Disorders, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Schizophrenia are psychiatric disorders of particular interest. The identification of biomarkers and biomarker signatures aids our understanding of how normal brain function works and how related pathologies develop. Furthermore, this work will help refine clinical diagnosis and develop personalised therapeutic strategies, improving patient outcomes. This multidisciplinary research involves the Adelaide Mental Health Biobank, Discipline of Psychiatry, as well as national and international collaborators.

Working as part of the Discipline of Psychiatry team I am investigating the cellular and molecular underpinnings of the bidirectional communication between the nervous and immune system within neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, PTSD and major depressive disorder. As part of this research I am also involved in maintaining the Adelaide Mental Health Biobank within the Discipline of Psychiatry. This comprehensive and well characterised psychiatric biobank will facilitate future research into the development of personalised therapeutic strategies for neuropsychiatric disorders.
