Ori Henderson-Sapir received the B.Sc. degree in physics and mathematics from Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel, and the M.Eng. degree from Tel-Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel, where he worked on the development of electrically small antennas. He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Adelaide, Adelaide, SA, Australia with the Lasers and Optics Group working on the development of mid-infrared fibre optic lasers. Ori then divided his time as an Optics and Laser Engineer at Ellex Medical and as a Research Associate at the University of Adelaide continuing his work with mid-infrared fibre lasers.

Ori always had a keen interest in the commercialisation of the mid-infrared laser technology, so in 2017 he co-founded the laser startup Mirage-Photonics. Ori then joined the Precision Measurement Group at the Institute for Photonics and Advances Sensing (IPAS) working on cryogenic sapphire oscillators ultra-stable clock development and commercial maturation.

Returning to research in near-IR and mid-IR fibre lasers in 2020, Ori worked on a US Air Force-funded project exploring the use of multi-mode optical fibres to scale power in near-IR fibre amplifiers while avoiding nonlinear limitations.

Since joining the University of Adelaide's OzGrav node at the end of 2022, Ori’s research focuses on creating monolithic mid-IR fiber lasers with the aim of integrating them into LIGO's thermal compensation system to enhance performance and expand detection capabilities.

Throughout his career Ori's research focused on mid-infrared fiber lasers development, their applications and pursuing their commercialisation.

My research focuses mainly on mid-infrared fibre lasers and their applications. I am one of the inventors of the dual-wavelength pumping technique that drove long wavelength fibre lasers to higher powers. I have keen interest in both the fundamental operation of mid-infrared fibre lasers of various types and their applications. My current research topics include and ongoing projects include:

  • High-power continuous wave (CW) mid-infrared fibre lasers operating at wavelengths beyond 3µm
  • Pulsed mid-infrared fibre lasers, especially with mode-locked short pulses.
  • Applications of fibre lasers operating around 3.5 µm.
  • Numerical modelling of fibre lasers in both steady-state and time domain.
