I am Head of the School of Biological Sciences.

In recent years I have been Associate Head (Research Education) in the School of Biological Sciences and Convenor of the School Research Education Committee, Coordinator of the Sciences Faculty ERA submission (2012 and 2015), Associate Dean (Research) and Associate Dean (Future Students) in the Faculty of Sciences from 2010-2015 and previously Head of the Soil and Land Systems Discipline (2003-2006).

I have an extensive background in remote sensing, vegetation ecology, and environmental science and management, with many years of experience in teaching, postgraduate supervision and research at the University of Adelaide, Roseworthy Agricultural College, and the South Australian College of Advanced Education.

I am a member of the ARC College of Experts, and leader of the SA Node and Deputy Director of AusCover, the remote sensing data facility within TERN.

In addition I am a Sessional Commissioner in the SA Environment, Resources and Development Court, and have served on numerous government advisory bodies including the SA National Parks and Wildlife Council, Wilderness Advisory Committee and the Development Policy Advisory Committee.

My research is in Earth observation: using remote sensing (from satellites, aircraft, lab & field instruments, and now drones) to document, analyse and monitor landscape composition and variation in space and time.

Contexts for this work are Australian arid and semi-arid environments, native vegetation, wetlands and agriculture.

I specialize in

  • hyperspectral sensing for discriminating and mapping vegetation, soil and water properties, and
  • assessing environmental condition and monitoring of environmental change with multi-temporal imagery.

I collaborate with government agencies, ecologists and environmental managers to develop new remote sensing approaches and tools for environmental assessments. This involves developing remote sensing proxies and indicators for biophysical phenomena to provide

  • new insights into environmental function via
  • objective, repeated, spatially comprehensive, cost effective approaches.

I teach and coordinate courses in remote sensing and environmental mapping and monitoring.

Remote Sensing III interprets image-based information gathered by sensors on space, airborne and ground-based platforms. The course introduces the principles and application of remote sensing to a range of disciplines - environment, geoscience, engineering and agriculture. Practicals give 'hands-on' experience with image analysis software, including processing and interpretation for projects. The course is offered at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Spatial Information and Land Evaluation introduces theory, history and current methods of spatial information generation, presentation and analysis including map reading and interpretation, GIS, GPS, surveying, remote sensing and image interpretation. It gives an overview of major Australian and South Australian mapping programs and spatial information in government agencies.

This level 2 course provides a foundation for level 3 study in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems.

I have supervised over 19 Honours students, 10 of whom have received First Class Honours. Opportunities for future Honours research projects are available in the Ecology, Evolution and Landscape Sciences booklet.

I supervise and co-supervise a large group of PhD students in projects using remote sensing and spatial analysis tools for understanding terrestrial and marine environments. In 2016 I was awarded the University of Adelaide Stephen Cole the Elder Award for Excellence in Supervisory Practice.
