Mr Matthew Nitschke

I am a postgraduate research PhD student in the School of Mathematical Sciences. My research concerns the modelling of the early stages of multicellular evolution.

The evolution of multicellular entities from unicellular ancestors signaled the emergence of a new level of biological organization.  It is one of the major transitions in evolution.  Despite its importance, there are many open questions surrounding the start of this transition.  The main goal of my research project is to understand how this transition occurred by constructing mathematical models.  These models will describe the process by which specific ecological conditions, or the environment, can imbue higher level groups with Darwinian properties.  This can be used to understand the exact conditions necessary to promote this phenomena and hence the start of the transition from unicellular to multicellular life.
