My main focus is on clinical psychology practice but I remain interested in critical approaches, in particular the way that discursive psychology can elucidate and re-examine taken for granted ways of thinking and talking about psychological ideas. My PhD research, for example, interrogated the notion of "rapport" as it applies to interviewing children about sexual abuse. My Honors research explored the notion of "best interests of the child" and the way this idea was used rhetorically to build a case for diverse positions during the 2003 Child Custody Inquiry. As a clinical psychologist, I am now interested in topics such as adult attachment styles and mentalizing abilities as they pertain to psychological treatment. I am also interested in the impact of client suicide on mental health practitioners, and factors that promote practitioner resilience, career longevity and that prevent or mitigate vicarious trauma. From a more critical perspective, I have an interest in the concept of "suicide prevention", the discourse surrounding this, and the ways this distributes responsibility for preventing suicide.
