Alex Ching-Tai Ng (吳清泰) is Associate Professor of the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering and Associate Dean (HDR) of Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences at The University of Adelaide.

He specialises in fundamental and applied research in structural health monitoring (SHM). His research interests include SHM, guided wave non-destructive evaluation, system identification, engineering reliability and risk analysis and composite materials. He is interested in applying SHM techniques to different engineering areas.

A/Prof. Ng earned his B.Eng. with First-class honours and M.Phil. from the City University of Hong Kong in 2005 and 2007, respectively, and his Ph.D. in 2011 from the University of Queensland under a full scholarship. During his study, he received a number of awards, such as Arup Best Student Award, Outstanding Academic Performance Award for Research Degree Student and Best Student Paper Award by the International Conference on Smart Materials and Nanotechnology in Engineering, and won the Airbus Fly Your Ideas Challenge Competition in 2009.

For his research achievements, he has received two prestigious research awards, Australian Research Council - Discovery Early Career Research Award (2012) and The Nishino Prize (2016). So far he has obtained research grants with a total amount of AUD$1.3 million. He has worked with industry, e.g. Australian Rail Track Corporation, CRC-ACS and Airbus Limited, and is currently holding an international patent.

A/Prof. Ng makes active professional influence worldwide through technical committees, conference organisation, and journal and competitive grant refereeing. Notably, he is Associate Editor (Asia and Pacific) of Engineering Structures, and International Journal of Structural Health Monitoring (IJSHM). He was also the Guest Editor of two special issues focused on structural health monitoring of civil structures in the IJSHM and Earthquakes and Structural An International Journal.

A/Prof. Ng is a member of Executive Committee of Australian Network of Structural Health Monitoring (ANSHM), which is formed by more than 30 universities/government agencies with the aim at promoting structural health monitoring research in Australia and worldwide. He also organised the 4th Annual Workshop of ANSHM in 2012. He is a member of National Committee of Applied Mechanics, Engineer Australia.
