Adriana Milazzo is an infectious disease epidemiologist and senior lecturer, and a member of the Climate Change; Ecosystem Health and Infectious Disease Epidemiology research group in the School of Public Health.

I recently completed a PhD investigating the relationship between heatwaves and incidence of foodborne disease. No other studies have explored the relationship between heatwaves and foodborne disease, hence this research is unique, with the findings contributing to heat-related foodborne disease prevention in the policy arena, including practical public health interventions at a local level with international adaptability.

Prior to working at the University, I worked in indigenous health, communicable disease control, and coordinated a national sentinel surveillance system for influenza like-illness. My research interests is in infectious disease epidemiology, climate change and population health, surveillance and zoonoses. My other area of interest is in Invasive Meningococcal Disease and social networking patterns and whether connectedness of social contacts confers differences in risk of disease transmission.

Infectious diseases - Prior to commencing at the University I had begun to establish a research career in infectious diseases while working at the Communicable Disease Control Branch (CDCB), SA Health with particular interest in foodborne and zoonotic diseases. My current research involves quantitative research methods and I continue to work closely with the CDCB to ensure that the research is also relevant to the work that they do.

My research related to my PhD was on foodborne disease and climate change focusing on the relationship between heatwaves and the incidence of foodborne infection. No other studies have explored the relationship between heatwaves and foodborne disease, hence this research was unique, with the findings contributing to heat-related foodborne disease prevention in the policy arena, including practical public health interventions at a local level with international adaptability.

Other research interests are in infectious disease epidemiology, climate change and population health, surveillance and zoonoses. Maintaining expertise in my chosen academic field of infectious disease epidemiology and environmental health is pertinent given the relevance of climate change as a global health issue.

My other area of interest is in Invasive Meningococcal Disease and social networking patterns and whether connectedness of social contacts confers differences in risk of disease transmission.

More recently my research has focused on COVID-19 including the impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions on COVID cases in SA and VIC, risk communication and pandemic preparedness.

The Climate Change; Ecosystem Health and Infectious Disease Epidemiology research group offers a number of research opportunities for students at a variety of levels including PhD, MPhil, Honours, MPH Coursework Thesis and Dissertation, MClinSci and Summer Vacation Scholarships. Details of the projects that are available for students in the Climate Change; Ecosystem Health and Infectious Disease Epidemiology research group can be found in the School of Public Health Student Research Project Handbook.
