Professor Vincent Bulone is the director of ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Cell Walls, a $32 million collaboration between the Universities of Adelaide, Melbourne and Queensland and five international institutions. Vincent Bulone is also the Director of 'Adelaide Glycomics', a Partner Laboratory established through a collaboration between the University of Adelaide and Agilent Technologies Australia Pty Ltd.

His research is focused on cell wall polysaccharide structure and metabolism in higher plants, oomycetes and fungi. Capitalizing on his long standing and renowned experience in the area of plant and microbial Glycoscience, Vincent brings novel research capabilities of strategic importance.

Research Interests

  • Biosynthesis of plant, fungal and oomycete cell wall polysaccharides: biochemical and biophysical approaches for the study of membrane-bound complexes with glycosyltransferase activity and characterisation of the corresponding polysaccharides, with particular emphasis on cellulose, (1→3)-β-D-glucan and chitin biosynthesis 
  • Metabolic engineering of plant and microbial polysaccharide biosynthetic pathways 
  • Quantitative proteomics; Protein/lipid interactions 
  • Engineering and characterization of carbohydrate-based composites 
  • Applied aspects of carbohydrate biosynthetic pathways, including aspects relevant to the following sectors: food sustainability, bioenergy, biomaterials, biorefinery, anti-fungal and anti-oomycete inhibitors and herbicides
